TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

 

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a standardized exam designed to assess the English language proficiency of non-native speakers who wish to study at universities where English is the medium of instruction.

 

Accepted by over 11,000 institutions across more than 190 countries and territories, TOEFL is one of the most recognized English proficiency tests worldwide. The most common version, the TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test), measures your skills in reading, listening, speaking, and writing—all within an academic context, simulating real university classroom and campus situations.

Exam Pattern

 

Reading: 36-56 questions (60-80 minutes), Max Section Score is 30

Listening: 34-51 questions (60-90 minutes), Max Section Score is 30

Speaking: 6 tasks (20 minutes), Max Section Score is 30

Writing: 2 tasks (50 minutes), Max Section Score is 30

 

Total Duration: 3 hours (plus breaks)

 

Overall Score: 120 (sum of all the four sections)

 

Minimum Score Accepted: Varies (usually 80-100)

 

Number of Attempts: No limit, However, you must wait at least 12 days between two attempts. 

 

Validity of the Scores: 2 years

 

 

 

Test Format:

 

Reading:

Type of Questions: Multiple choice, vocabulary in context, sentence completion, and paraphrasing.

Skills Tested: Understanding academic texts, identifying key points, and inferring meaning.

 

Listening:

Type of Questions: Multiple choice, note-taking, summarizing content from lectures or conversations.

Skills Tested: Comprehending spoken English in academic and everyday contexts.

 

Speaking:

Type of Questions: Independent speaking tasks (expressing an opinion on a topic) and integrated speaking tasks (responding to a passage or lecture).

Skills Tested: Clarity, coherence, and pronunciation.

 

Writing:

Task 1: Writing based on listening and reading passage (integrated).

Task 2: Independent writing task where you express and support your opinion on a topic.
